Discussion Forums

Each Handheld Librarian VI Online Conference presentation has a “Discussion Forum” associated with it. This is a great way to share ideas, questions and resources with other participants before and after the live sessions take place. In addition, a Participant Introduction forum allows you to introduce yourself to other conference attendees and make new connections.

One of the barriers we have to mobile usage in our organization is that most (if not all) of our resources sit behind our firewall. So for example, for our users to access any of our eresources, they have to tunnel in (VPN), then access via our library website (its essentially IP authentication). Of course there are some vendors who offer direct access to their resources through other authentication (usually a userid/pass) but there are some who do not.
So, I’m wondering if there are any other organizations out there with these same limitation and how they are working around this to get users access to resources via their mobile devices.

We recently set up a mobile app that includes links to our electronic resources, all of which are behind a proxy server. We are running into a similar access issue because the login page of the proxy server is not a mobile friendly page and users login with their 16 digit barcode which is not easy to remember. We advise people to save the barcode as a note on their device but ultimately we would like to change the way people login to something easier to remember or, even better, somehow have the device remember their login information.

We have a single sign-on (SSO) that authenticates users–basically a landing page that promps for a UN/PW. Once authenticated, user requests are seen as coming from our IP range. The only downside to this is the cost of the SSO licenses. So far, no problems with being able to access vendor resources that don’t offer mobile authentication access via UN/PW. The administrator for the SSO can block access to sites, which is useful for the resources that have licensing restrictions for “off-campus” access.

Another thought. For those who have implemented some type of mobile policy/solution in their organization or school, do you have any metrics or sense about how many students and in particular researchers and professors are actually using mobile platforms to do research? If so, what kind of data are you collecting? I’d also be interested to know if you have implemented mobile aware access to your users (ie. websites with mobile format) or have actually developed or purchased mobile apps? And why you decided to go with the mobile site or mobile app?

    Locking Down and Displaying Devices

I am going to order locking cables for the Kindle, Nook, and iPad from http://www.flexguard.com. I am looking into different ways of displaying these devices in our tech petting zoo. So far, I found this BookGem Book Holder http://www.amazon.com/Bookgem-Book-Holder-Kindle-Tablet/dp/B0006J323C/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1328107517&sr=8-9 but I’m not sure if this is the best solution. Any ideas? Thanks!

RE: Top Mobile Apps for Higher Education: I posted my slides on Slideshare at http://www.slideshare.net/mlinarklar/top-mobile-apps so that you can checkout the apps. They are supposed to add the presentations to the Archives soon- but I know you want to try the apps!
