Description:
Come hear about how we overhauled and re-branded our mobile web site by applying user-centered methods and integrating HTML5 and jQuery Mobile with dynamic data sources. Relying on information gathered through a needs assessment and user testing, our iterative development process not only polished up the site’s existing features, but resulted in some nifty new services – like geolocation for our multiple library locations across campus. Upon launching the new site, we assessed the impact of the changes through a comparison of usage statistics and by soliciting user feedback. We’ll conclude with a discussion of the factors (local, technical, and otherwise) that influenced our decision making during and after the redesign.

Description:
The MSU Libraries are checking out tablet devices to library faculty and staff and are looking to extend that privilege to students and other university employees in the future. Available are a Nook Color, a Toshiba Thrive (Android OS), and an iPad 2. As we launched this new service we had several concerns – how do they work; what apps should they include; how do we clear user information after check-outs; and how can patrons access their own apps and information on a borrowed tablet or reader? This session will address those issues and we will discuss both productivity and “fun” apps; steps to remove personal information; and how cloud based services allow patrons to log into their own accounts and access their apps and information. We believe our experiences can help other Libraries as they consider how these new devices can benefit their faculty, staff and patrons.

Presenter: Avril Cunningham, USC Libraries

Description:
The presentation will provide an overview of Geolocation services and present future scenarios using Geosocial features of eBooks. I will cover the most popular Geolocation services and their model user, what types of eBooks offer Geolocation and Geosocial services, and how to use those features to create a shared online reading experience. The presentation will offer a detailed discussion of BookCrawler’s Skyhook which is the very first location based ebook app. The Book Crawler’s community feature brings location to the forefront, helping ereaders discover what is being read within a geographic region and charting the popularity of specific ebooks within a social network. With the integration of popular social networks like Goodreads, Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare, users can comment on what they are reading, check-in from their local Starbucks where they are reading, or share their favorite author, without ever leaving the app.

Description:
We are at a critical juncture in the ernmging digital information ecology. We haven’t just encoutered a fork in the road but the opportunity or crisis of too many forks and too many options. Indeed, we have no option of choice, just the illusion of choice and ambiguity rules. What do we need to think about to empower libraries and retain relevance in this hybrid environment of print and digital, mobile and anchored devices, standards proliferation, and competing options and emerging user behaviors. Stephen will ask the questions and offer some recommendations to open our conference and lead to learning, collaboration and discussions over the course of Handheld Librarian.
